Metabolic Effects of Medical Marijuana Therapy

15, June 2023

Marijuana has a wide range of favorable clinical effects on pain, sleep, mood, gastrointestinal symptoms, appetite, and physical activity, factors that may affect the metabolic characteristics of consumers.

In this study, we prospectively assessed patients who had recently begun medical marijuana treatment. All patients in the rheumatology clinic were recruited, and they had just been approved for medical marijuana treatment against chronic pain. After consent, demographic and clinical parameters were recorded, including indications for medical marijuana treatment, consumption patterns, types of marijuana, and monthly doses of medical marijuana. Fasting blood glucose, hemoglobin A1c, insulin, lipid, cortisol, and uric acid levels, as well as body weight, were all obtained before and after 3 months of cannabis consumption.

The Wilcoxon sign grade test was used to compare baseline levels with levels obtained after 3 months. Twenty-eight patients completed the study. The mean age of the patients was 47.8±9.1 years, and about 70% were female. 75% of patients have fibromyalgia. The average amount of cannabis consumed per month was 22.21±3.6 grams, and 21 patients (75%) used extract (oil). There was no significant change in any of the parameters assessed. Medical cannabis, which is mainly extract, did not have a significant effect on any parameter of metabolic characteristics in patients with chronic pain syndrome.
